She was born Mechthild Pierick in a farming community in Reken, Germany. In 1980, after reading the biography of the foundress, Something Beautiful for God by Malcolm Muggeridge, she went to meet Mother Teresa in Berlin. She felt called to join her work and moved to India to join the Missionaries. She succeeded Sister Nirmala Joshi as Superior General on March 24, 2009, elected on the first ballot and heading an institute which had over 5,000 members worldwide at that time.

Her presence in Cuba began in 1986, taking place its first foundation in Havana. Actually they are 46 sisters at 10 homes, nine of active sisters in Havana, Isla de la Juventud, Pinar del Río, Cárdenas, Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila, Las Tunas, Bayamo, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo; and one of contemplative sisters in El Cobre.

In the Diocese of Holguín they are present in the city of The Tunas since August 12th of 1991.
